What size tent should I buy?
Tents come in all shapes and sizes. The right one for you will not necessarily be the right one for someone else. Hence, the wide variety being sold in stores and catalogs.
We bought a four man tent and found that it barely held two people. Can you tell me why?
When they advertise tents they advertise them as two man, four man, six man, and so on. That number usually refers to the amount of people that can be crowded into the tent minus gear. General rule a 10' X 10' tent will hold two adults comfortably with gear, cots or double air mattress plus space for standing when changing clothes. I would always go a couple people higher than what will be occupying the tent.
What is the difference in the cost of tents?
The cost for tents are the same as other consumer items. Usually the higher the price the better the quality. Higher price tents are usually more durable and withstand weather and last a lot longer, maybe years, depending on use. If you plan on staying local and or you have just started camping you might want to go with a little cheaper tent until you decide that you enjoy camping. A less expensive tent will hold up OK the milder and drier the climate. You can always upgrade to a better tent later, and keep your original budget tent for when conditions allow.
With so many choises how do you choose a sleeping bag?
When it comes to choosing a sleeping bag, which is next in importance after selecting a tent, depends on the type of camping and climate. As you get started you will discover that you do not always need a sleeping bag and a light cover will do. If the weather is cool at night you might need a bag plus some warm clothing to sleep in. Choosing a sleeping bag usually comes down to personal preferences such as fabric feel and roominess.
When it comes to camping stoves, which is better gas or propane?
Both fuels are good. The choice usually comes down to convenience. Propane is easier to deal with than gas but does not produce as much heat as white gas stoves. With propane there are bottles that get screwed onto the stove so you put the bottle on light the stove and start cooking. White gas stoves have a fuel tank that has to be filled with gas through small filler spout. The white gas stove will produce the most heat of any stove. It burns cleanly without any odor and does not effect the taste of the food.
